Klay Thompson already receiving overwhelming doubt as a Maverick
By Orel Dizon
The Dallas Mavericks are coming into the 2024-25 campaign with a roster that looks better than it did at the end of last season.
Shams Charania even praised the team for an incredible offseason, especially after the addition of Klay Thompson, whom he said would fit "perfectly" as the three-man during an appearance on the OGs Show.
Even though the Mavs aced the Klay sign-and-trade deal, some believe otherwise, remarking that he is a shell of his former All-Star self. While he may not be as adept in shooting and defense as before, Thompson remains one of the best marksmen and can still keep up with a lot of wings in the NBA.
Klay Thompson's 3-point shot attribute in NBA 2K25 is way too low
Interestingly, even the people who determine the players' NBA 2K25 ratings don't seem to have that much faith in Thompson, giving him a 3-point shot attribute of just 89.
While that number is not too shabby and ranks the 2016 3-Point Contest champion fourth behind Stephen Curry, Grayson Allen, and Kevin Durant, there's no reason for him to be rated less than 90 and equally to Mike Conley.
Curry being given 99 is a no-brainer, considering that Thompson's former teammate is arguably the greatest shooter in the history of the NBA. Even Allen's 93 rating makes sense, as the Phoenix Suns sharpshooter led the league in 3-point efficiency last season with 46.1 percent.
However, is Durant really a better sniper from downtown than his former Warriors teammate? Based on last season, there might be an argument for that notion. It's worth noting, though, that Thompson's ability to sink a 3-pointer efficiently on catch-and-shoots and off the dribble would be unparalleled if his Splash Brother didn't exist.
Some might say that the five-time All-Star's outside shooting prowess appeared to have dipped last season. He converted only 38.7 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc, marking that the second time he shot less than 40.0 percent from that range.
However, the 2023-24 campaign saw the 34-year-old veteran perhaps underutilized by the Warriors' coaching staff and displeased with the seeming lack of respect from the front office. So that might have factored into his drop in efficiency.
What's funny is that despite Thompson having a "down" year last season, he still finished with 268 makes from 3-point land. Only Curry, Luka Doncic, and Donte DiVincenzo sank more. The California native also hit five 3-pointers in 25 appearances in the 2023-24 campaign, proving that he can still go supernova and fill Dallas' desperate need for a lethal shooter.
Regardless of the doubts and disrespect that come his way, Thompson looks poised to be an unstoppable weapon for the Mavs, more so that he would be sharing the court with Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
People can talk as much as they want and doubt Thompson's game and his ability to fit on the Mavericks, and his game is going to do all of the talking starting in October. Even outside of his 3-point rating in NBA 2K25 which is far too low, people are already panicking about Thompson's slight regression and wondering if he can be good enough defensively for the Mavs.
Thompson looks to have had a strong offseason so far, and this doubt could be turned into confidence soon.
