Grading the trade for the Dallas Mavericks

To start things off, the Dallas Mavericks would hang up the phone if the New York Knicks wanted to make this move. Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington provided the Mavs with a huge boost after they traded for them last season, and without them, they wouldn't have made the NBA Finals.

But in this situation, we must analyze the trade as if it already went through.

If Dallas were to make this move, they'd have one of the best starting lineups on paper with Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, Julius Randle, and Dereck Lively II. Their offense would be unstoppable, but their defense would take a big step back by losing Washington.

Randle has never been known to be an elite defender, and there have already been concerns about his effort on that end of the floor in the past. Dallas' back line with Washington and Lively II is likely already going to have a ton of pressure on them due to Thompson, Doncic, and Irving's defense, and switching Washington with Randle would be tough.

Randle would give them a dominant interior presence who can handle the ball and create his own shot, but he may not be the best fit in Dallas. He is more of a ball-dominant player than a complimentary piece, and their offense would have to be majorly adjusted.

The Mavs get a D for this trade, as they give up two starters from last season and one role player for an elite starter, but he likely wouldn't fit well.
