Dallas Mavericks GOAT Dirk Nowitzki is bringing back his tennis classic for the first time since 2019 on Sept. 25. The annual event was put on hiatus by the pandemic, but Nowitzki is excited for the return to raise money for his foundation. Dirk will play in the star-studded event at the SMU Tennis Complex that begins at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday.

Luka Doncic will also take part in the event. The Mavericks superstar will be back in town after a long summer of basketball with the Slovenian National Team. Doncic played in Dirk’s tennis classic back in 2019, and the 23-year-old plans to put on a show during his second time in the event.

How is Luka’s game on the tennis court? Fans know he is ultra-competitive, but can Doncic hold his own? How will he fare against tennis pros like Andy Roddick and Marty Fish, who are scheduled to play in the event? Nowitzki gave fans the inside scoop on Luka’s tennis ability during a recent interview.

Dirk Nowitzki dishes on Luka Doncic’s tennis ability

Nowitzki was effusive in his praise of Doncic throughout the interview, but the Tall Baller from the G pulled no punches when discussing the current Mavs superstar’s abilities on the tennis court. See Dirk’s quote below.

"Luka played a few years ago when we were able to do it, and we love having him. He’s the star here, and people love him. I wouldn’t say he is the best tennis player. He’s a big tennis fan. His skills are just okay. I always tell him, you should just stick to basketball, but we are so happy and grateful he comes and supports."

Perhaps fans will get treated to a tennis challenge between the two Mavs greats. Doncic did not embarrass himself in the 2019 version of the event, and he dominated Mavericks vice president of basketball operations Michael Finley on the tennis court back in May. Expect Luka to be having a blast as he takes on the challenge on Sunday.

MFFLs should head out to Dirk’s tennis classic on Sept. 25. It is a fantastic opportunity to watch some tennis and meet the Mavericks GOAT. Nowitzki and Luka Doncic will be signing autographs and posing for pictures during the event, and all the proceeds go to fantastic causes in the DFW area, so do not miss it.
