Dallas Mavericks GOAT Dirk Nowitzki retired in 2019 after 21 years with the organization. He came to North Texas as a 20-year-old kid from Germany with potential, and he never left. Nowitzki is an all-time great after more than two decades of dominance for the Mavs, including winning MVP in 2007 and a championship in 2011.
Dirk rejoined the organization as a special advisor to owner Mark Cuban in the summer of 2021. He has an office at the freshly renovated practice facility, and Cuban has stated many times that Nowitzki can be as involved as he wants to be.
Fans saw Dirk traveling with the team during last season’s playoff run, but is his role expanding this year? Nowitzki has been in attendance at every practice so far, and the Tall Baller from the G is even carrying around a notebook to the sessions. Does that mean his role is expanding?
Is Dirk Nowitzki taking on a larger role with the Mavericks this season?
Nowitzki attended practice during training camp last year, but he was not there every day. Does that mean his role is expanding? If Dirk wants it to, then it will. He has a ton of knowledge to offer, and the Mavericks GOAT has a closer relationship with current superstar Luka Doncic. Fans should expect to see more Nowitzki this season, and that is a positive for the entire organization.
Tyson Chandler is taking on an expanded role with the Mavericks this season. Head coach Jason Kidd has done a fantastic job of cultivating an inclusive environment where the current players can benefit from the lessons of former Mavericks. J.J. Barea and others will also be in attendance to help the current Mavs throughout the year.
How involved will Dirk Nowitzki be this season? Only he can answer that question. He is set to have his statue unveiled outside the American Airlines Center this season, and the GOAT will enter the Hall of Famer in 2023. It is a massive year for Dirk as he hopes to help the Dallas Mavericks take the next step on the court. Be on the lookout for Nowitzki this season, and stay tuned to The Smoking Cuban for all the latest.
