After three games of preseason basketball, the Dallas Mavericks have made their first set of moves.
After this move was rumored earlier this week, the Mavs officially waived former TCU star guard Mike Miles Jr.
This was a move that no one expected as Miles Jr. was signed on draft night to a two-way contract, but he saw no action in Dallas’ first three preseason games. Along with Miles Jr., Dallas also waived Joe Wieskamp and Jordan “Jelly” Walker. Wieskamp was a player that Mavs head coach Jason Kidd complimented early in training camp, but he got limited action in Dallas’ first three preseason games.
Report: Mavericks waive two former collegiate stars, viral guard
Walker played more than Wieskamp during the preseason and averaged 5.7 points and 1.7 assists per game in 8.1 minutes per game. Neither Walker nor Wieskamp looked ready for the NBA, but the most puzzling part of this set of moves is the waiving of Miles Jr.
Miles Jr. was brought in within a few hours of the NBA Draft ending, and everyone seemed excited that he was with the Mavs. He was from Dallas, played at TCU, and he seemed like he couldn’t wait to play for the Mavs, but he got waived.
Dallas does already have plenty of guards to bring off the bench, but the fact that Miles Jr. didn’t get to showcase his skills at all during the preseason is strange.
With the waiving of Miles Jr., Dallas now has two open two-way spots. There have been rumors that Dallas plans to sign Dexter Dennis with one of the two remaining spots, but it has not been confirmed yet. With the signing of Dennis, Dallas would then have one remaining two-way spot.
That spot could go to the last remaining Exhibit 10 player, Greg Brown III or Dallas could look elsewhere.
Both Miles Jr. and Wieskamp were stars in college, and they will likely find a home elsewhere or spend the season in the G League. Walker was best known for being in "jelly fam" and going viral for incredible layups.
