The Dallas Mavericks traded for Nerlens Noel back in 2017 as the 22-year-old big man was having a down fourth season in Philadelphia. Joel Embiid was emerging after missing his first two seasons with injuries, and the Sixers just could not play both big men on the same floor. The Mavericks pounced, and they were eager to sign Noel long-term as a marquee piece in Dirk Nowitzki's twilight years.
Fans know how the story turns out. Noel turned down a four-year deal worth $70 million before playing one season at the qualifying offer where he struggled. He left Dallas for the Oklahoma City Thunder during free agency in 2018, and he never recouped the money that he turned down.
Noel currently plays for the Pistons where he has struggled to crack the rotation. Detroit prefers playing young centers Isaiah Stewart and Jalen Duren, which leaves no minutes for Noel. The Pistons are exploring his trade market ahead of Thursday’s deadline, and the Mavericks are one of several teams linked to the 28-year-old big man. Get the latest here.
Mavericks trade rumors: Dallas among several teams interested in Nerlens Noel
The Athletic’s James Edwards III shared all the latest on the Pistons (subscription required) ahead of the trade deadline where he notes six teams have recently called about Noel. The list of contenders includes the Mavericks, Nuggets, and Kings from the Western Conference. Noel has a $9.7 million team option for next season, and teams would treat him as an expiring contract.
Dallas needs an upgrade at the five after free agent signing JaVale McGee has not worked out. The Mavericks have nowhere to turn behind Dwight Powell with Maxi Kleber and Christian Wood out injured. Both players are nearing a return, but the Mavs would love to add a more traditional center before Thursday’s deadline.
This is not the first time the Mavs have been linked to Noel this season, but the two sides have yet to reach an agreement. Dallas is searching for larger moves before circling back on Noel. The 28-year-old is out of the rotation, so he will likely have to wait until the final minutes before the deadline to see if he gets moved.
Will the Dallas Mavericks have a reunion with Nerlens Noel? The 6’11 big man can still be a quality rotation player, he just needs the opportunity. Will he find it after the deadline? Stay tuned for all the latest.
