The Dallas Mavericks made one of the biggest mistakes in franchise history in 2004 when they let Steve Nash walk in free agency. The 29-year-old point guard won two MVP awards in Phoenix and cemented his Hall of Fame legacy as the Suns became the Mavericks' immediate rivals in the Western Conference. It was a regrettable move, and history repeated itself when Dallas let Jalen Brunson walk last summer.

The Hall of Famer and eight-time All-Star was hired as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets in 2020, despite not having any coaching experience. Nash retired from playing in 2014 and spent some time as a consultant for the Warriors along with doing media. The Nets had championship aspirations with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving on their roster, and Brooklyn added James Harden early in Nash’s first season in charge.

Things did not go as planned. Fans know it was drama after drama with the Nets before Nash was fired just seven games into his third season. He went 94-67 and won one playoff series, but it was the off-the-court distractions that caught up with Brooklyn. Could Nash get another shot as a head coach?

Will Dallas Mavericks Hall of Famer Steve Nash be the Raptors' next head coach?

Shams Charania reported that the Raptors interviewed Nash for their head coach opening. Toronto is sitting down a wide range of candidates, including former Mav J.J Redick, but Nash hits differently. He is a former head coach and Hall of Fame player that is a Canadian icon. Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer reported that Nash is eager to get a second chance as a head coach.

What better spot than Toronto? They have plenty of talent but need a new voice. Steve Nash is respected among players, and he had success navigating the drama in Brooklyn. The entire situation was a circus at times, but the Nets made the postseason both years and were inches away from knocking out the eventual-champion Milwaukee Bucks in 2021.

Remember, Steve Nash tried to convince his friend Dirk Nowitzki to join him on the coaching staff in Brooklyn. The Dallas Mavericks GOAT does not want to get into coaching, but do not be surprised to see Nash ask again if he secures the gig.

Was Steve Nash an elite head coach? There were certainly issues in Brooklyn, but the Hall of Famer is eager to fix them and improve just as he did during his playing career. Will he get another shot in Toronto? It is too soon to tell, but expect Nash to be ready whenever the chance comes.
