With the days slowly counting down to the start of the 2024 NBA Free Agency, teams around the league will look to improve their teams. One of the teams looking to improve coming off an NBA Finals loss is the Dallas Mavericks.

The Mavs roster has talented players like Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, but the team needs another player to add to their team to give them another chance to reach the Finals again next season.

There has been rumors of the Mavs and an elite wing player on the Denver Nuggets having mutual interest in joining forces together this Summer according to NBA Insider Marc Stein of "The Stein Line."

Mavericks show interest in move for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and the Mavs have a mutual interest in working out a deal. However, Caldwell-Pope to the Mavs would likely have to take a sign-and-trade for the move to happen. A sign-and-trade would have to happen if Tobias Harris were to join the Mavs this Summer too.

If the Mavs were to add Caldwell-Pope, they would find themselves a solid two-way player with good veteran experience. The former eighth overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft has been on two championship teams with his most recent on the 2023 Denver Nuggets.

Caldwell-Pope spent the last two seasons in the Mile High City and was a key part to the Nuggets roster. Along with playing outstanding defense, Caldwell-Pope shot over 40 percent from three in his two seasons in Denver. If there's one thing the Mavs desperately needed in the Finals against the Celtics, it was 3-point shooting. Caldwell-Pope will be able to provide 3-point shooting for the Mavs.

The Mavs would also get a consistent starter in the lineup who can play shooting guard and small forward. Caldwell-Pope started all 152 games he played in Denver.

Now that Tim Hardaway Jr. is gone, Caldwell-Pope would be a huge upgrade to Hardaway Jr. with his play on both ends. With Hardaway Jr. being a liability in the 2024 Playoffs who struggled shooting threes, Caldwell-Pope would be a player the Mavs can rely on to make 3-pointers and also play solid defense.

Adding a two-time NBA champion who has the ability to play both ends at a high level like Caldwell-Pope is a move the Mavs should look at doing this free agency. The days are counting down for the Mavs to begin their work to improve their roster to make it back to the Finals.
