The Dallas Mavericks upgraded their roster by trading for Christian Wood on June 15, but the free agency of Jalen Brunson is a massive question mark hanging over the organization. Their options to replace him will be limited if the 6’1 guard decides to sign with another team as an unrestricted free agent, which puts more pressure on Dallas.
General manager and president of basketball operations Nico Harrison made it clear that re-signing Brunson was the team’s number one priority this offseason, and there is mutual interest between the sides. JB’s stellar playoff run where he averaged over 21 points per game increased the price, but the Mavericks are confident that he will be back.
Fans were not as sure after the Knicks hired Jalen’s father to be one of their assistant coaches, and Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus opened the door further in his latest rumors. On the latest episode of the Please Don’t Aggregate This podcast, Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer shared his thoughts on the situation.
Rumors: No question Jalen Brunson will re-sign with Dallas Mavericks
Fischer was asked about the report from his colleague, and if there was any question about Brunson leaving the Mavericks this summer, and fans can see his response below.
"It is not a question to me. It is definitely not a question with people I’ve been talking to since the combine. Mavs people have been pretty confident about this from the jump, especially as they made a strong Western Conference Finals push. Sure, is he going to be way more expensive than the Mavericks would like him to be? Yeah, his number is going to be over $20 million AAV. It is probably going to be close to $100 (million), and it might be over $100."
Fischer went on to say that he does not expect him to be anywhere else and that all his sources believe JB will be back with the Mavericks next season.
Fans can breathe a sigh of relief after reading Fischer’s comments on the situation. The Dallas Mavericks were always favorites to re-sign Jalen Brunson, and it appears most people around the league are treating it as a foregone conclusion that JB will be back in Dallas next season.
The Mavs still need to iron out the details and get his signature on paper. Jalen Brunson will be able to re-sign with the team on June 30, and both sides will be hoping a deal gets announced shortly after things open.
