The Dallas Mavericks have been searching for guard depth off the bench for multiple weeks, and they finally filled their final roster spot by signing Spencer Dinwiddie to a one-year deal.

Dinwiddie played for Dallas during parts of the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons and now was the perfect time for a reunion for both sides. Dallas needed a third creator desperately, and Dinwiddie needed a change of scenery after a strugglesome tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Although Dinwiddie did have some bright spots during his time with the Lakers, it was time for him to move elsewhere. Dinwiddie signing with the Mavericks was a huge pickup for Nico Harrison, and this was actually a beautiful example of the Mavs pulling out the reverse card to land him.

Dinwiddie choosing Dallas tells you all you need to know

During the middle of last season, Dinwiddie was a free agent as he was bought out following being traded by the Brooklyn Nets. Dallas was interested in signing Dinwiddie, but he decided to sign with the Lakers instead.

This is a move that upset Mavericks fans as Dinwiddie's explanation on why he joined the Lakers was a bit confusing, but Dallas pulled the ultimate reverse card this summer because the Lakers wanted to bring Dinwiddie back.

According to NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Lakers wanted to bring back Dinwiddie, but he decided to join the Mavs instead. This is the ultimate change of events considering that Dinwiddie did the same thing to the Mavs last season, and Dinwiddie's decision further emphasizes that the Mavs are turning into a hot free agency destination.

More and more players are starting to sign with the Mavericks in free agency, and the Lakers have to be a bit frustrated that he didn't return this summer.

Dinwiddie will step in and immediately become one of the better creators on the team, and his ability to play on and off the ball is intriguing. The Mavs gained someone who can play either guard spot, and Dinwiddie will likely play a big role off the bench considering Dallas' needs.

He was also an excellent shooter during his time in Dallas, and if he can return to that form, the rest of the league needs to watch out.
