1 Prospect for every possible Dallas Mavericks 2023 NBA Draft position
By Tyler Watts
The Dallas Mavericks are facing one of the most important nights in franchise history on May 16. They tanked their final two games to finish with the tenth-worst record in the NBA, which means Dallas is clinging to their first-round pick heading into the 2023 NBA Draft Lottery. The Mavs owe the selection to the Knicks if it falls outside the top ten.
Dallas desperately needs to improve their roster after a disappointing season, but they have limited assets. Having a top-ten pick to use in a trade package would be massive. The Mavs want to win now and have a young superstar, so they will explore trading this draft pick. Can they find a significant enough upgrade to let it go if they stay in the top ten?
With the draft lottery on Tuesday night, what will the Mavericks do if they move up? Here is a look at which prospect Dallas will target at every possible draft position. Remember, the Mavs can only move up into the top four or select tenth. If they fall to 11th or below, the Knicks get their pick.
Prospect for Dallas Mavericks at number 1 overall: Victor Wembanyama
Odds to land this selection: 3.0 percent
Victor Wembanyama is the most hyped prospect since LeBron James. The 7’5 big man is a true unicorn and an immediate game-changer. Wembanyama’s stats from this season sound like they are out of a video game as he averaged 22.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 3.1 blocks in 32.3 minutes per game. He will immediately be one of the tallest players in the league, and the teenager can handle the ball and shoot threes.
Victor Wembanyama is must-watch television because fans never know what he is going to do next. Earlier this season, he shot a 3-pointer, gathered the miss, and got a putback dunk. Off his own missed three. The 19-year-old is incredible and still getting better.
The winner of the 2023 NBA Draft Lottery will take Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick on June 22. Dallas has a three percent chance in the lottery, and fans will have their fingers crossed.
