Dallas Mavericks position battle heading into training camp: 3. Reserve wing
With three wings likely to play significant minutes and finding 30-plus for Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis, there will be a playing time crunch on the bench. Jalen Brunson and Maxi Kleber will each play around 25 meaning these four players will likely be fighting for the 25 minutes or so left in the rotation.
Favorite: Sterling Brown
Challengers: Josh Green, Frank Ntilikina, Trey Burke
Brown inked a two-year $6 million deal with the Mavericks this offseason to improve their wing depth and floor spacing. He shot 42.3 percent from 3-point range last season and has a massive edge in outside shooting over the other three contenders for minutes here.
The Mavs selected Green in the first round in 2020 because they believed in his 3-and-D potential, but he barely played as a rookie. Will the 20-year-old be ready for rotation minutes this season? Can he outplay Brown, Ntilikina, and Burke for the spot?
Trey Burke is a name to watch here after the veteran guard played in 62 of the Mavericks' 72 regular-season games last season. He is a sparkplug coming off the bench with the ability to get white-hot in a hurry. Will Jason Kidd favor Burke’s offensive firepower and ability to create shots over Brown, Green, and Ntilikina?
