4. James Donaldson, 1988

Some might not know who James Donaldson is, but Donaldson was traded to the Mavs from the Los Angeles Clippers in November 1985. Donaldson was known for being a tough defender and rebounder in the NBA.

The tables started to turn in Dallas with Donaldson on the team. In his third year with Dallas, Donaldson was selected to the 1988 NBA All-Star Game. Donaldson finished averaging seven points per game, 9.3 rebounds per game, and 1.3 blocks per game.

1988 would turn out to be special for Donaldson and the Mavs as the franchise reached the Conference Finals for the first time in franchise history. Unfortunately, the Mavs were eliminated in a painful seven-game series loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

After 1988, Donaldson never was an All-Star again. Donaldson's tenure in Dallas came to an end when he was traded to the New York Knicks in February 1992. After finishing the 1991-92 season with New York, Donaldson would play two seasons with the Utah Jazz, and play in Greece for one year. Donaldson retired after the 1994-95 season.
