5 players Mavericks should have signed in free agency
By Noah Weber
2. Matisse Thybulle
One of the most dissappointing parts of the summer was the Mavericks not landing Matisse Thybulle.
Dallas did their best to get him on their roster, as they signed him to an offer sheet as he was a restricted free agent, but the Trailblazers ended up matching the offer sheet, and Thybulle is now under contract in Portland for the next three years.
It was no secret that Thybulle wanted to be in Dallas, and now he has to go back to Portland. This is one of the biggest disadvantages of restricted free agency, as players oftentimes don't end up where they want to be.
Thybulle would have been a great fit in Dallas, and he would have been an even better fit than P.J. Washington. Thybulle would have been the starting small forward, and his length and instincts make him one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA.
He already has two All-Defensive Team appearances, and being in Dallas would give him a great shot at being on a third All-Defensive Team. Thybulle would have been the best defender on the team by a long shot, and he would help take some of the defensive pressure off of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving by guarding the other team's best guard while Williams takes the best forward.
