The first round of the 2024 NBA Draft in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center concluded last night. For the Dallas Mavericks, they had to hear 30 players get their names called as the team had no first-round pick, and the team saw one of their rumored trade targets from last season get dealt to the Blazers.

Entering the second round of the draft tonight, the Mavericks own the 58th pick, the last pick in the draft. With the last pick in any draft, teams want to make sure they get the best possible player.

Even though there is speculation of the team drafting USC's Bronny James, the team has other better players to draft who are musts for the team.

Entering night two, there are five players that are must gets for the Mavs.

An advantage of having the last pick in the draft, is a team can be confident scouting out the remaining players available and pick the player that fits the team the best.

Unfortunately, the Mavs might have to wait to see if some of the players they must draft will fall to them. The team can always trade out of the 58th pick to draft a player they want though.

5. Jamal Shead (Houston)

Jamal Shead is a 6-foot guard from Manor, Texas, that the Mavs could use for a backup point guard to Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic. With Irving at the point, Shead could have a great mentor in Irving with elite NBA experience. A young player like Shead would need mentorship, and with Irving being a mentor to Luka Doncic, he could do it again for Shead.

Shead comes from a winning program out of the University of Houston. The senior averaged 12.9 points per game, the second highest among the Houston team and also played great defense with averaging 2.2 steals per game, which led Houston.

A guard that can score and steal the basketball would fit into the Mavs. And with coming from a winning background at Houston, Shead can bring his winning mindset to Dallas who just made the 2024 NBA Finals.

Adding another player who is used to winning at Houston would make more of a winning bond. Shead is a player who would be a must for Dallas, and he could even get some minutes next season depending on how he develops.
