3. Start trade talks to acquire 3-and-D wings

Cap space is going to be non-existent for the Dallas Mavericks, especially if they plan on re-signing Kyrie Irving. That will leave the front office will just the taxpayer mid-level exception, the bi-annual exception, and minimum contracts to hand out in free agency. If the Mavs are going to make significant upgrades, they will likely have to do that through the trade market.

There will not be a perimeter stopper available at the taxpayer mid-level, especially one that is an average or better 3-point shooter. Dallas must acquire that player via trade. Their assets will be limited, but the Mavericks will have at least one first-round draft pick to deal. It will depend on where they finish, and if their 2023 first round heads to New York or not.

3-and-D wings are the second most valued commodity in the league behind star talent. No franchise is parting with one for cheap. If Dallas wants a true stopper, it could cost them two first-round picks. The Mavs may be hoping Josh Green grows into this role, but it is not happening by next season.

They need to start these trade dialogues now. Multiple teams will be searching for wing help, so getting there first could be the Mavericks' only advantage.
