Mavericks now have the perfect point guard to sign after unanticipated move by Hawks
By Noah Weber
The Dallas Mavericks are now 34-25 after Wednesday night's win over the Toronto Raptors, and they have moved up to the seventh seed in the Western Conference.
Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and P.J. Washington all put on a show, and the Mavs offense was firing on all cylinders. It was good to see Washington exit his slump, as he knocked down five 3-pointers and was playing with confidence.
While Dallas is playing great, they still have an open roster spot that they need to fill.
Mavericks now have the perfect point guard to sign after unanticipated move by Hawks
After trading away three players and only acquiring two, the Mavs were left with 14 players on their roster. This allows them to have some flexibility to finish out their playoff roster, and the Atlanta Hawks recently made an unexpected move that could work dividends for the Mavs if they decide to capitalize on it.
According to a report by Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Hawks are waiving point guard Patty Mills. The Mavs happen to have a hole at the backup point guard spot, and Mills is someone who they could consider signing to fill that hole.
This season, Mills is averaging 2.7 points, 1.1 rebounds, 0.7 assists, and 0.5 steals per game while shooting 37.3 percent from the field and 38.2 percent from downtown. This has been Mills' worst season to date since his rookie year, but the Mavs could pursue him to provide some depth behind fellow Australian, Dante Exum.
Exum's season has been plagued with injuries, and the Mavs need one more player who can lead the second unit when needed. Jaden Hardy has proved that he can do that, but his minutes have fluctuated heavily as of late despite playing some of the best basketball of his career.
Mills isn't someone who moves the needle much for this team, but signing another veteran voice in the locker room who has vast playoff experience could be a great idea. The Hawks waiving him wasn't a move that was expected, and they could have just gifted the Mavs their backup point guard for the playoff push.
