NBA Rookie Power Rankings: Wembanyama drops, who takes the No. 1 spot?
By Jaren Boslow
5. Dereck Lively II
Last Week's Rank: 5
Dereck Lively II continues to sit at the five-spot in this week's power rankings.
Lively II has continued to surprise many NBA fans with his consistent play. The young big man has upped his rebound numbers to 7.5 per game and continues to dominate on the offensive glass. Over the last week, Lively II averaged 4.5 offensive boards per contest.
Lively II has also continued to showcase his shot-blocking ability. Using his length he has been able to deflect multiple shots out of play due to his 7-foot-6 wingspan. It will be critical that Lively II continues to expand on his shot-blocking ability but the blueprint has been laid out for a future Defensive Player of the Year case.
Lively II has not only been blocking shots, but he's also becoming reliable around the perimeter. Multiple times now, teams have looked to spread the Mavericks out defensively when Lively II is on the court. His perimeter defense is still a work in progress, but the young big man has showcased his potential around the perimeter.
Offensively, the former Blue Devil has continued to dictate the paint when he rolls with Irving or Doncic. Lively II has also been lethal in the paint using his push shot. This was a shot that Lively II tried perfecting over the summer, so it's nice to see the hard work pay off.
Unfortunately, Lively II could miss some critical time after taking a scary fall against the Lakers on Wednesday.
