NBA Rookie Power Rankings: Brandon Miller falls, who takes his place?
By Jaren Boslow
4. Dereck Lively II
Last week's rank: 5
Dereck Lively II becomes one of our highest risers this week after contributing to some big wins for Dallas.
Lively II has bounced back in a big way after having two disappointing performances last week. The rookie center had a direct contribution in the win over the Golden State Warriors as he led the charge with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Double-doubles seem to be something that is becoming a regular sight for Lively II.
Despite his massive contribution against the Warriors, the same couldn't be said for the Mavericks' New Year's Day game against the Utah Jazz. Lively II finished with ten points and six rebounds but couldn't get a foothold against Utah's massive lineup. The Mavs would end up losing 127-90.
On Wednesday, Lively II suited up against the Portland Trail Blazers. In his 19 minutes, he may not have scored, but he had a big contribution on the defensive end as he exited the game with three blocks and two steals. Unfortunately for Mavs fans, Lively II exited Wednesday's game early with a gruesome ankle injury.
After such a bad injury, many fans expected Lively II to miss critical time. However, it seems he has avoided any serious injury, as he was listed as questionable before Friday's game. Lively II could still end up missing a game or two, but being listed as questionable just one day after such a nasty injury is a promising sign.
Lively II continues to be crucial to winning for Dallas, and he is one of the most valuable players on the team.
