The 2024-25 NBA season is right around the corner, and the endless NBA offseason is finally almost over.

While June and July are filled with the NBA Finals, Summer League, and free agency, August has been more of a slow month for NBA fans. Dallas Mavericks fans were blessed by their favorite team reaching the NBA Finals for the first time since 2011 last season, and they also had a busy offseason in which they signed Klay Thompson and added key bench pieces to ensure they are at the top of the Western Conference once again.

While August has been extremely slow for news for Mavs fans, it finally sped up on Tuesday afternoon.

What is the NBA Cup?

The NBA Cup is the NBA's annual tournament that happens early in the season. This year, it begins on November 12.

It consists of all 30 teams, and these 30 teams are split into six groups, three from each conference.

The winner of each group earns a spot in the knockout rounds along with one wild card from each conference. Once in the knockout stage, it's single elimination.

If a team makes it past the knockout stage, they will advance to the Semifinals. The Semifinals and Championship will take place in Las Vegas on December 14 and 17.

How did the Mavericks fare in 2023 NBA Cup?

The NBA Cup, formerly known as the In-Season Tournament, began last year, and the Mavs didn't do as well as many people would have hoped.

While the Mavs were in a tough group that included the LA Clippers and Nuggets, they only managed to go 2-2 and didn't advance past the group stage into the knockout round. The Pelicans won Group B by finishing with a 3-1 record with their only loss being against the Houston Rockets.

Dallas got a feel for how the NBA Cup works last season, and although it'll be hard, maybe they'll give fans a better showing this time around.

What does the winner of the NBA Cup receive?

Just like last season's NBA In-Season Tournament, the winners of the NBA Cup will receive an NBA Cup trophy along with prize money that goes to the team's players. Teams that advance into the knockout round receive prize money, and the further you go, the more prize money you get.

Last season, players from the winning team received $500 thousand while players from the second-place team received $200 thousand.

A huge incentive for the players to play hard, and if their team makes it all the way, they'll be receiving a big reward. Even if a team doesn't win it all, they still get rewarded for being in the top eight teams.

With a strong showing in group play, the Mavs could be in the hunt for a big payday.
