Former All-Star’s hot Luka Doncic take has aged horribly after 12 games

Coming off of a thrilling 130-117 victory Wednesday night against the Washington Wizards, Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks are more than satisfied with a 9-3 record to start the season.

Doncic has been putting up MVP-caliber numbers and bounced back strong against Washington after a pretty bad clunker against New Orleans on the second game in a home-and-home series.

Doncic isn’t just playing at an extremely high rate through his pace of play and 3-point shooting, but he’s also leading the Mavericks to wins. Doncic has been consistent in playing every game this season for Dallas and has evolved as a team leader tremendously.

Before the season kicked off though, former NBA All-Star Kenyon Martin went on the “Gil’s Arena” podcast with Gilbert Arenas and appeared to not really understand how prolific of a talent Doncic is.

“In my opinion, I don't think he's the best player on his basketball team," Martin said. "If you give Kyrie the ball first [in a 1v1], Luka won’t touch the ball. Luka can’t guard this (expletive) camera stand.”

This take by Martin isn’t credible and bodes credence to the fact that he probably didn’t watch many Mavericks games last season. Furthermore, Martin’s take looks even worse as Dallas is defying expectations with a 9-3 start with Doncic as their clear best player and fourth-quarter extraordinaire.

Irving is starting to turn heads pretty drastically after a 35-point performance the other night against New Orleans, and he’s definitively more of a 1-B than a number two option in Dallas. However, Irving isn’t the best player on the roster given Doncic isn’t even in his prime yet and has already been a perpetual MVP candidate for multiple seasons in Dallas.

Irving is an extremely talented player of course but he hasn’t been in Dallas long enough to be the top dog. Martin’s take will fall into the wishing well just like some other takes about the Mavericks heading into the season in the basketball world will, as not many had Dallas getting off to this good of a start on a national scale.
