By Noah Weber
The Dallas Mavericks seem to be about done for now building through free agency this summer, but building for the future is just as important.
Mavericks shooting guard Josh Green talked about the possibility of staying in Dallas long-term, and it sounds like he is eager to stay in Dallas. Although there weren't talks of a contract extension at that time, now there have been.
Report: Mavericks and fourth-year guard open contract extension talks
NBA Insider Marc Stein reported that the Mavs and Green have "opened initial talks on a contract extension." Stein also stated that the deadline to get the deal done would be October 23. If Dallas can't get an extension done, Green will enter restricted free agency next summer.
This is great news for Mavericks fans, as it sounds like they want to keep Green in Dallas. They aren't putting the contract talks off like they have in the past, and a deal could be done before we know it.
Last season for Dallas, Green averaged 9.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 0.7 steals per game. Green was a crucial piece for Dallas' bench unit, and he even started in 21 games.
What makes Green special is his endless hustle, athleticism, and defense. He is always moving when he is on the floor and is a crucial piece to Dallas' young core as he is just scratching the surface of the type of player he can be. Green has also been a player that teams around the league have called about when discussing trades, and Dallas should avoid moving him.
He has tons of potential and is the perfect role player to have on your team. Although he is known for his defense and hustle, Green developed tremendously on offense last season. He shot 40.2 percent from downtown, and it looked like his confidence took a step in the right direction. He is also a great slasher and is a good scorer in transition.
Now that Green and the Mavericks have begun talk about a contract extension, fans can take a sigh of relief. Green is playing for Australia in the FIBA World Cup, and fans can make their judgments if he has taken the next step in his game.
We'll have you covered with all the latest news and rumors surrounding the Dallas Mavericks and Josh Green this offseason, so stay tuned.
