The Dallas Mavericks signed JaVale McGee to a three-year contract worth $17.2 million this offseason. It will be the veteran big man’s second stint in Dallas, and the team targeted the 34-year-old to fill holes in their roster. The Mavs needed to improve their rebounding and rim protection, so they used the majority of their mid-level exception to sign McGee.

Head coach Jason Kidd was quick to name McGee the team’s starting center, but fans should temper their expectations. The seven-footer has not averaged over 23 minutes per game since 2012, and he is best suited to play ten to 20 each night. McGee figures to take Dwight Powell’s role, and he is a significant upgrade over DP.

McGee got a three-year deal this summer, but that has not stopped him from putting in work. Fans have seen him lifting and hitting the gym to work on his game. McGee’s latest run featured three other NBA veterans, and McGee showing off some unexpected skills.

McGee was filmed working out with Coach Mike G alongside Jrue Holiday, Caris LeVert, and Jarred Vanderbilt. Fans can see the highlights below.

Watching McGee blow past LeVert on a drive was not among the things I expected to see. The seven-footer looks sharp, and he even showed off his shooting range near the end of the video.

The Dallas Mavericks do not need JaVale McGee to stretch the floor or do anything outside of what he is known for. The seven-footer is an elite roll man and rim protector. That fits perfectly with Luka Doncic on the floor as the Mavs superstar is the best shot creator in the league right now.

Expect JaVale McGee to continue working on his game as training camp approaches. The 34-year-old big man should be ready to hit the ground running, and he will give the Mavericks a significant boost and some championship experience on their roster. Stay tuned to see how McGee performs playing off number 77.
