Rotation mistake Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd must avoid: 5. Center usage

One of the most interesting things to watch during the build-up to the regular season is how coach Kidd plans to attack the center position. The Mavs' best lineup features Kristaps Porzingis at the five surrounded by Luka Doncic, Dorian Finney-Smith, Reggie Bullock, and Tim Hardaway Jr., but will the new head coach want to use KP primarily as a center?

Dallas has a ton of options at the five this season. Porzingis, Dwight Powell, Willie Cauley-Stein, Boban Marjanovic, and Moses Brown all play their best at the center position and deserve rotation minutes, so keeping all five players happy will be impossible.

Jason Kidd cannot make the mistake of sticking with one player or two players. He needs to play the matchups at the five and exploit mismatches. Kidd should not be afraid to use Boban against backup big men that cannot stretch the floor or shy away from having a quick hook if things are not going well. Willie Cauley-Stein’s advanced metrics are so strong from last season in part because former coach Rick Carlisle would pull him from the game quickly when he was struggling.

Figuring out the matchups and which option to use won’t be easy, but head coach Jason Kidd cannot make the mistake of just sticking with one player when it is not the ideal choice.
