How Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama can follow the footsteps of Mavs star Luka Doncic
In less than 12 hours, the Dallas Mavericks' season will officially begin.
The Mavericks will start off their 2023-24 season on the road in a highly anticipated matchup against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.
As much as fans are excited to see the debut of Wembanyama, the city of Dallas is very excited to see for what could be the year Luka Doncic wins his first career MVP award, and also the matchup between Dereck Lively II and Wembanyama.
How Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama can follow the footsteps of Mavs star Luka Doncic
Although Wembanyama comes in at 7-foot-4 weighing 230 pounds with an absurd wingspan, compared to Doncic at 6-foot-7 also weighing 230 pounds, they’ve had many similarities to their games and lifestyles.
Fans have already acknowledged the fact that Wembanyama could go down as one of the best players of all time, but before that is certified he will have to go through Luka.
Before both players were drafted into the league, they were highly hyped up by NBA fans as to being some of the best European players to play the game of basketball. Before the two stars had entered the association, they both had very successful careers overseas as teenagers.
What made these two young phenoms gain respect from the NBA fans was when they made their debuts against professional teams from America. In 2016,17-year-old Doncic showcased his talents with his former team, Real Madrid in a preseason matchup against Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Since then, Doncic returned to Madrid this preseason as Dallas played Real Madrid in a game this preseason.
Just like Doncic, the young Frenchmen, Wembanyama had created heavy attention when he matched up against the second overall pick of the 2023 NBA draft, Scott Henderson and the G League Ignite.
Not only did both players have great professional careers overseas, but they both have the potential to go down as some of the most elite scoring and playmakers of NBA history. Doncic has clearly proved his case with accolades such as NBA Rookie of the Year, 4-time All-NBA First Team and All-Star.
The main question will be is whether or not Wembanyama will be able to follow the footsteps of Doncic and be the next young European talent to take over and shock the league. Doncic has already shown that he thinks highly of Wembanyama, and tonight's matchup could be the beginning of a great rivalry.
