Grade the Trade: Lakers land star guard from Mavericks in mock blockbuster
By Noah Weber
The Dallas Mavericks made another big move in free agency as they signed Derrick Jones Jr. on Wednesday.
They finally got the defensive-minded wing that they wanted after missing out on Matisse Thybulle, and Jones Jr. gives Dallas much-needed wing depth.
But are the Mavericks done now? Or could another trade be brewing?
Grade the Trade: Lakers land star guard from Mavericks in mock blockbuster
It seems like the Mavs will do whatever they can to move both Tim Hardaway Jr. and JaVale McGee, but they've also been in trade rumors for a starting center and could pursue Clint Capela.
Other than those moves, the Mavericks seem pretty set.
They had a great draft night as they drafted Dereck Lively II and Olivier-Maxence Prosper while also trading for Richaun Holmes and signing Mike Miles Jr. to a two-way contract. Another good move by Dallas was acquiring Grant Williams through a sign and trade.
Dallas needed more defense in the frontcourt, and Williams brings that and more. They also signed Seth Curry to a two-year deal, and that could end up being the most underrated moves of the entire offseason, as he is one of the best shooters in the NBA.
Dallas looks like they've built their roster correctly around Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, but what if Irving doesn't fit in and the Mavs miss the playoffs like they did last year?
That doesn't seem likely, as Irving seems motivated as ever to compete for a title with the Mavericks, but it's still a possibility.
In this mock trade, the Mavericks trade one of their star guards to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Here we grade the trade for both teams involved and discuss why or why not the teams should make this trade.
