3 starting, 3 backup, and 3 rotation center targets for Mavericks in free agency
By Jack Simone
2. Starter - Jakob Poeltl
As the Dallas Mavericks look to improve their defensive presence heading into next season, Jakob Poeltl would be an amazing addition to their starting lineup.
This past season, Poeltl was traded at the deadline from the San Antonio Spurs to the Toronto Raptors, but now, he’s an unrestricted free agent. And with the uncertainty surrounding Toronto, he could look to move on.
Reports have indicated that the Raptors would like to bring Poeltl back on a new deal, with Marc Stein (subscription required) noting that a contract could be worth around $20 million annually.
However, if the Raptors decide to shift directions and hit the reset button, Dallas should absolutely be lying in wait to steal him away, likely via sign-and-trade.
Poeltl appeared in 72 games this past season, playing 26.5 minutes per contest. He averaged 12.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game on 62.9% shooting from the field.
The interior presence Poeltl brings to the floor would greatly help the Mavericks on the defensive end, as well as giving them a nice pick-n-roll option next to Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
It seems unlikely that Poeltl departs from the Raptors, but if he does, the Mavericks should absolutely try to make something happen.
