Mavericks make groundbreaking move to secure future right before Finals
By Noah Weber
The Dallas Mavericks are less than 48 hours away from tipping off the 2024 NBA Finals, and all eyes from the basketball world are on the Mavs.
There is plenty of chatter from all over about this series, including Kristaps Porzingis and Kyrie Irving's returns to their old teams, "beef" between Luka Doncic and Porzingis (that has since been shut down by Doncic), and both superstar duos going for their first title win together.
This series is going to be one for the history books, and right before the NBA Finals started, the Mavs made a huge move that will set them up for years to come.
Dallas Mavericks extend Nico Harrison right before NBA Finals
The Mavs signed GM Nico Harrison to a multi-year contract extension on Tuesday, and this move couldn't have happened at more of a perfect time. Harrison has been the mastermind who constructed this Mavericks team, and the moves he made over the last year and a half helped turn the Mavs into a team that missed the playoffs entirely into a championship team.
The first move that Harrison made over the last year and a half that really got the ball rolling for the Mavs was trading for Irving. The Mavs absolutely fleeced the Brooklyn Nets in that trade, and they doubled down on their investment by re-signing him last summer.
Harrison's mid-season trades for Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington also helped this team tremendously, as this team turned everything around after the trade deadline. Washington and Gafford provided Dallas the boost they desperately needed on both ends of the floor, and them buying into Jason Kidd's system and culture has helped them be seamless fits on the Mavs.
Harrison deserves a ton of credit for the way he has constructed this team, and he and Kidd are going to be two important leaders in Dallas for years to come considering that they both signed extensions during this playoff run.
Harrison has proven that he is one of the best GMs in all of basketball, and this contract extension is reflective of that. His relationships around the basketball world have helped this team tremendously, and having Harrison around for the long haul will put the Mavs in a position to hang with the best teams in the NBA for years to come.
For all the latest on Nico Harrison's Dallas Mavericks throughout the 2024 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics, stay tuned.
