Early Dallas Mavericks 2023 trade deadline prediction: 2. Trade pick for a center
The Mavs tried to address their center issues this offseason as they traded for Christian Wood and signed JaVale McGee. They were outrebounded in nearly every game during their run to the conference finals last season, and Dallas struggled mightily to protect the rim. The front office attempted to address those issues, but things have not worked out.
McGee has gone from the team’s starting center on opening night to completely out of the rotation. He has struggled mightily on the defensive end of the floor and appears to be a poor fit in the team’s system.
Christian Wood has played most of his minutes next to Maxi Kleber because of his defensive issues. With Kleber sidelined for an extended period, the team’s need for a center upgrade has never been more imperative.
The Dallas Mavericks trade a second-round pick for a center before the Feb. 9 trade deadline. It is a modest but necessary upgrade that brings some versatility to their lineups. Dallas will be focused on defense and rebounding ability at the five. Christian Wood gives them a versatile offensive option, and the Mavs would love to add a defensive ace they could use when the matchup dictates it.
