5 Bold predictions for the Dallas Mavericks’ offseason
By Tyler Watts
3. Wing depth remains an issue
Trading Dorian Finney-Smith and Spencer Dinwiddie to Brooklyn for Kyrie Irving made the Mavs' already porous defense significantly worse. Winning a shootout was the only option for Dallas after the deal. It did not work, and they desperately need wing help if they are going to change that fate this summer.
If the Mavericks trade Tim Hardaway Jr., they will just have Josh Green, Reggie Bullock, and Jaden Hardy as wings on their roster. Dallas needs to acquire at least two options this offseason if they going to jump back into contention.
No team is eager to give up a talented wing. Behind superstar players, wings are the most valuable commodity in the NBA. Dallas has just two first-round draft picks eligible to trade, and the free agent crop of wings is weak. The Mavs are eyeing Khris Middleton, but there is no way to acquire the three-time All-Star.
The Dallas Mavericks find a few cheap options, but they struggle to make an impact on both ends of the floor. The front office wants length and athleticism around Luka Doncic, but they fail to add those needed pieces during a wild summer of player movement. Wing depth quickly becomes one of the team’s biggest issues as they struggle to make a massive turnaround in the deep Western Conference.
