12 Potential Mavericks free agent targets with ties to Jason Kidd
By Tyler Watts
1. Khris Middleton
Would Middleton be a three-time All-Star without Jason Kidd? The 6’7 wing was a second-round pick by the Pistons in 2012 before being traded to the Bucks as part of the package for Brandon Jennings in 2013. He barely played as a rookie before working his way into the Bucks rotation. Milwaukee was the worst team in the NBA during his first season. Brandon Knight was the leading scorer, but things would change quickly.
The Bucks hired Jason Kidd, drafted Jabari Parker, and were back in the playoffs in 2014. The Hall of Famer point guard empowered Giannis Antetokounmpo and Middleton to become stars. He wanted them to be more aggressive and look to score. Middleton averaged 18.5 points per game in his second season under J-Kidd, and Giannis was quickly evolving into a superstar.
Neither was happy when Kidd was fired in 2018, but both went onto new heights without him. The Bucks won the title in 2021, and they are favorites to win again in 2023.
Khris Middleton has a $40.3 million player option for next season that he will likely decline to become an unrestricted free agent. He will be one of the top names on the market and should land a massive contract this summer. Dallas will not have the cap space to acquire him, but coach Kidd would certainly be interested in reuniting with the 6’7 wing.
Who will the Dallas Mavericks add in free agency? Will that player have ties to head coach Jason Kidd? Stay tuned to find out.
