12 Potential Mavericks free agent targets with ties to Jason Kidd
By Tyler Watts
2. Brook Lopez
Lopez was an All-Star in Brooklyn, but he never averaged more points per game than the one season Jason Kidd was the Nets' head coach. The seven-footer produced 20.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in 31.4 each night during the 2013-2014 season, including shooting a career-high 56.3 percent from the field.
The Nets played better after Lopez’s season-ending injury, but that did not stop Kidd from trying to recruit the seven-footer to join him in Milwaukee. Ultimately, Lopez decided to stay with the Nets for three more years before he was traded to the Lakers in 2017.
Lopez struggled in his one year in LA before coming to Milwaukee where he transformed into a stellar role player and defensive anchor. The 35-year-old was in the running for Defensive Player of the Year as the Bucks are looking for their second championship in three years.
The Dallas Mavericks should try to sign Brook Lopez away from Milwaukee this summer. He would be a fantastic fit next to Luka Doncic in Dallas. The seven-footer can protect the rim and space the floor, but he struggles to rebound. Luka’s skill on the glass could lessen that issue, and Lopez certainly has plenty of postseason experience to help Dallas get back next season. The Mavericks should target the seven-footer this summer, but landing him will not be easy.
