Buyout candidate Dallas Mavericks should target: 4. John Wall

Wall was traded back to Houston on deadline day, and he will be waived by the Rockets. Neither side has any interest in a reunion, so the five-time All-Star point guard will be free to sign with any team in the coming days.

The Mavericks need a third playmaker on their roster. They traded for Kyrie Irving, but it cost them Spencer Dinwiddie. Dallas has two elite ball handlers, but they lack depth behind them. General manager Nico Harrison said the team is focused more on wing depth (subscription required) in the buyout market.

They still need another playmaker, and Wall offers them something the team lacks. The 32-year-old can get downhill and attack the basket. The Mavericks need more speed and straight-line drive ability. Injuries have taken a toll on Wall’s production, but he can still get to the basket for easy buckets.

He would be playing spot minutes as a third ball-handler. Would Wall accept that role, which would include some DNP-CDs? The five-time All-Star wants to join a contender, and the Mavericks offer him a chance to play with two other elite creators. John Wall will find a new home on a playoff-bound squad, and multiple teams will be interested, so stay tuned to see where the five-time All-star lands.
