Trade for Dallas Mavericks to upgrade at center: 4. Connelly makes moves

The Minnesota Timberwolves took a massive step forward this season as they made the playoffs for just the second time since 2005. They will be looking to take the next step under their new president of basketball operations Tim Connelly. The veteran comes over from the Nuggets, and he will be looking to make some changes this summer.

Would Connelly be willing to trade the team’s backup center for draft picks? Could the Dallas Mavericks swoop in and help Naz Reid take his game to another level in a larger role? Here is a potential deal that could work out for both sides.

Mavericks receive: Naz Reid

Timberwolves receive: 2022 26th overall draft pick, Marquese Chriss

Reid has shown flashes in his limited playing time, but he is stuck behind Karl-Anthony Towns in Minnesota. The 22-year-old is not going to bypass one of the franchise’s cornerstones in the rotation, so he will always be looking at a limited role.

For his career, Reid averages 19.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.1 steals, and 2.0 blocks per-36 minutes on 49.0 percent shooting from the field, 34.3 percent on his threes, and 72.3 percent from the foul line. The 6’9 big man fouls too much, but that should come down as he learns to play a larger role.

Naz Reid could take his game to another level playing next to Luka Doncic in Dallas. He has shown flashes as a roll man and his shooting continues to improve. The 22-year-old could be Luka’s pick and roll partner for the next decade-plus. The Dallas Mavericks would be betting on his development, but a late first-round pick is a small price to pay for a potential starting center.
