5 free agents the Dallas Mavericks should sign after day 1 free agency frenzy
By Tyler Watts
The Dallas Mavericks were relatively quiet on what turned out to be a wild opening night of free agency. Kevin Durant requesting a trade out of Brooklyn dominated the headlines as plenty of players changed teams, including Jalen Brunson leaving the Mavericks to go play for the Knicks.
The Mavs agreed to a three-year deal worth $20.1 million with JaVale McGee, but it cannot be signed until the moratorium is lifted on July 6. McGee fills a need as a rim protector and rebounder that should be a strong pick and roll threat playing off superstar Luka Doncic.
Dallas still has three open contracts and holes to fill on their roster. They would love to add another defensive-minded wing, and the Mavericks must acquire another ball-handler after Brunson’s departure. Here are five free agents they should still be targeting.

The Mavericks are likely limited to just offering minimum contracts after the JaVale McGee deal. They want to keep a piece of their mid-level exception open to sign second-round pick Jaden Hardy to a multi-year contract, and their final two roster spots are likely to go to Goran Dragic and Theo Pinson.
Dallas may not be done, though. The Athletic’s Tim Cato noted he believes the Mavs are going to make a trade. Can they find a workable deal? Stay tuned on that.
