What should Dallas Mavericks do if Jalen Brunson leaves: 1. Trade for an undervalued PG
No Lakers fans, the Mavericks do not want Russell Westbrook, but they should be looking for another contributor at the point guard spot. Dallas is a better offensive team with someone that can create flanking Luka Doncic. The Mavs have Spencer Dinwiddie on their roster, but they need someone else that can keep their offense rolling.
If Brunson leaves, Dallas should look to rehab a ball-handlers value mid-season just like they did with Dinwiddie. Does Ricky Rubio get off to a slow start coming off an ACL injury? Is someone struggling to get rotation minutes or just not fitting in a locker room? The Mavericks should look to acquire another ball-handler out of the bargain bin, whose value they can rehab.
Losing Jalen Brunson would hurt the Mavericks, but they have nobody to blame but themselves. They had multiple chances to extend the 25-year-old guard, but the team wanted to maintain its flexibility. If JB decides to head to New York, the Mavs need to quickly pivot into improving their depth, adding a 3-and-D wing, and getting another ball-handler to come on a veteran minimum deal.
The Dallas Mavericks can always fix the holes in their roster as the trade deadline approaches, but fans should buckle up for a wild week of movement across the NBA. There promises to be more than one surprise, so do not miss it.
