What should Dallas Mavericks do if Jalen Brunson leaves: 3. Work out sign-and-trade
If Brunson informs the Mavs that he is headed to New York, they should call the Knicks and attempt to extract some value in a sign-and-trade. New York needs to make at least one more trade to offer JB a four-year worth over $100 million. That move could be with Dallas where they grab Cam Reddish or Alec Burks.
The Mavericks could go in a different direction and just grab a draft pick in the deal. That would create a significant trade exception that Dallas would have when trying to acquire another piece at the deadline.
Tim MacMahon reported during the playoffs that Dallas was not interested in any sign-and-trade deals, but if Brunson says he is leaving, getting any value is better than zero.
The Knicks are not going to be willing to give up a ton of assets, and the Mavericks should be careful not to take back a negative contract with multiple years left. Dallas wants to maintain its flexibility, so they can get involved in a trade if a star player becomes available.
The Mavs still owe their 2023 first-round pick to the Knicks from the original Kristaps Porzingis trade. After that selection is conveyed next summer, Dallas will have all their picks available to move if a marquee name becomes available.
