Who are the next superstars that request a trade? Can Dallas Mavericks capitalize?
By Tyler Watts
The Dallas Mavericks are far from satisfied with their roster. General manager Nico Harrison made the bold move of trading Kristaps Porzingis to Washington for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans in his first season, and it helped Dallas reach the conference finals. The start to year two has been up-and-down as they upgraded the frontcourt, but lost Jalen Brunson in free agency.
The Mavs need another ball-handler. Their front office has been searching the trade market since JB decided to sign with the Knicks, but nothing has materialized thus far. They may have to head into training camp with just two playmakers on their roster.
It is no secret that the Mavericks want to add a second star to play off of Luka Doncic. Two are currently available, but Dallas does not have the assets to acquire them quite yet. Who are the next stars to ask out, and could that be when the Mavs get involved?
Who are the next superstars that could request a trade? Can Mavericks capitalize?
Kevin Durant requested a trade just before free agency opened, and he recently doubled down on it. Donovan Mitchell is also available as the Utah Jazz look to rebuild, but the price to acquire both stars is astronomical because they both have four years left on their deals. The Mavs still owe their 2023 first-round pick to the Knicks from the original Kristaps Porzingis trade, so they do not have the capital to land KD or Mitchell.
Things could be different by the time the next superstar asks out. The Mavericks will have all their future first-round picks to offer after their obligation conveys to New York next summer, and Dallas will be aggressive in looking for a star. Who is likeliest to ask out and can the Mavs capitalize? Let us take a closer look.
