Who are the Dallas Mavericks starting, and how does that impact the second unit?

Head coach Jason Kidd named JaVale McGee and Spencer Dinwiddie starters back in July after the team signed the seven-foot center. Luka Doncic, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Reggie Bullock are likely to join them in the team’s starting five on opening night against the Suns. Is Kidd set on that or will there be a competition during camp?

Christian Wood and Tim Hardaway Jr. believe they are starters and would love the chance to compete for roles. Kidd and his staff will be learning a lot during camp, but will they open up competitions for starting jobs? Wood figures to play 30-plus minutes with McGee being limited to around 20. THJ may need to break into the starting five if he wants to play 30-plus this season.

Wood coming off the bench likely pushes last season’s starting center Dwight Powell to the fringes of the rotation. Maxi Kleber has passed him in the team’s big man pecking order, and how many minutes are available to a fifth big man? Powell will be out of the rotation on some nights, and he will need time to adjust to his new role.

Starting Doncic and Dinwiddie will force Kidd to quickly pull one, so he can stagger their minutes. Number 77 is outstanding with another creator on the floor, but the Mavericks will have to give Dinwiddie an early rest, so he is ready to lead the second unit when Luka needs a break.
