5 Biggest questions for the Dallas Mavericks heading into training camp
By Tyler Watts
The Dallas Mavericks are looking to build on their Western Conference finals run from last season. Superstar Luka Doncic proved he is one of the best players in the world, and the 23-year-old keeps getting better. Could this be the year he breaks through and wins MVP? Doncic would love to be in the running, but he wants his team to win more than anything.
The Mavs had an up-and-down offseason. Jalen Brunson departed in free agency to join the Knicks. Dallas upgraded their frontcourt with the additions of Christian Wood and JaVale McGee, but was it enough to overcome losing the team’s second-leading scorer?
Dallas enters camp with a full 20-man roster, but there is still plenty to answer, including how the team rounds out its squad heading into the regular season. Here are the five biggest questions the Mavs face as camp opens on Sept. 26.
Will the Dallas Mavericks fill their final roster spot?
The Mavs enter training camp with 14 players under guaranteed contracts. It would seem like a no-brainer to add one more to round their regular season roster, but they are over the luxury tax line for the first time since 2011. Owner Mark Cuban talked about leaving the spot open to improve the team’s in-season flexibility.
The free agent market is thin at this point, so the Mavs will likely enter the regular season with just 14 players unless another team unexpectedly cuts someone during camp. They could keep one of their training camp invites on a non-guaranteed contract. That gives the Mavericks the freedom to cut the player if a better option becomes available.
If someone wants the team’s final roster spot, they are going to have to grab it with an outstanding training camp. Will they? It is one of the many things to watch over the next three weeks.
