Bargain bin free agent wing Dallas Mavericks should target: 5. Cody Martin

Martin is the only restricted free agent on this list. The Hornets have the right to match any offer, so the path to acquiring the 6’5 wing is likely through a sign-and-trade.

The 26-year-old just keeps improving his game, and he still has room to grow. Martin averaged 7.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.2 steals in 26.3 minutes per game in his third NBA season while shooting 48.2 percent from the field, 38.4 percent on his threes, and 70.1 percent from the foul line.

He also rated 77th in the league in FiveThirtyEight’s defensive RAPTOR. The Hornets were not shy about putting Martin on the opposition’s lead ball-handler, and Dallas would love to add another skilled defender at the point of attack.

Martin is a 3-and-D wing that can handle the ball and make a few plays. His jump shoot keeps improving and could reach a new level in Dallas under shooting coach Peter Patton.

He wound fit nicely next to Luka Doncic and could play in any unit. Cody Martin would allow Dorian Finney-Smith and Reggie Bullock to get some rest as he brings the defense off the bench. His twin brother Caleb is also a restricted free agent this offseason, and both are under-the-radar names that could turn into impactful signings.
