The Dallas Mavericks started this past season with high expectations, as the team was coming off an NBA Finals run. However, on Friday, the team's vision was ripped to shreds when they fell to the Memphis Grizzlies 120-106. Dallas struggled to get points on the board, as their lack of shot creation put them in a bind.
It was clear the Mavs deeply missed Luka Doncic. The team desperately needed a player to get his teammates involved and create opportunities for them. This was evident as Derick Lively II struggled. Lively II has failed to show flashes of his dominant pick-and-roll game as his opportunities have been limited since the trade.
The Mavs' offensive failure could be pinned on Nico Harrison. He was the mastermind behind the Doncic trade. He believed that defense wins championships, as trading away a franchise player could help Dallas get back to the promised land.
Harrison's vision, though, has started on the wrong note. For starters, Davis has struggled to stay healthy. He was clearly not himself on Friday and was on the bench constantly getting treatment. Newcomer Caleb Martin, too, has been nonexistent since coming to Dallas. So what gives?
Nico Harrison's plan for Mavericks will lead to a disaster in the future
Harrison's plan? Harrison has always believed in his idea that he is building a team for the next 3-4 years. He believes Mavs fans must trust the process. Eventually, Kyrie Irving and Davis will lead Dallas to the promised land. What could go wrong?
Honestly, a lot. For example, Irving and Davis are in their early 30s. In NBA terms, this means their time is coming to an end. Most players are lucky if they stay relevant past their mid-30s.
Another component to consider is health. As mentioned, Davis missed valuable time with Dallas this season. He struggled to stay on the court and has always been known to struggle with injuries. Davis's lack of availability and Irving's recovery from an ACL injury could be some of the many reasons Harrison's plan fails.
Other reasons could be Harrison's true intentions. He has yet to provide a clear reason as to why he traded the team's one true generational star. Harrison's only explanation has been "defense wins championships."
It's possible, though, that there is a deeper explanation for everything. Last week, Harrison held a closed-door media interview session with selected journalists.
One of the questions asked during the conference was Harrison's timeframe. Reporter Christian Clark from The Athletic asked Harrison about his intentions for the 2028-29 season. His response had fans questioning his true motivation.
"Yeah. I mean, I have three years left on my contract, I see myself finishing it out. In terms of Dallas, like, this is our home. My family, they’re gonna finish school here. This is where, this is where we live. So, this is where I’m living," Harrison stated.
This was a vague response to Clark's question as to whether he wanted to be the Mavs' general manager whenever his contract ended.
Harrison's inability to fully answer questions outlines his true character. His explanation that he is going to finish out his contract is a slap in the face to fans pleading for answers. It's clear his 3-4 year plan is an outline of his contract status and not the team's future, and he only cares about what the team looks like while he's the GM, and nothing past that.
Trading away Doncic was just the beginning of Harrison's downfall. It'll take a miracle to solve this season's disastrous trail of events.
