After selecting Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick in last night's NBA Draft, the wait and the suspense Dallas Mavericks fans have felt for the last month and a half is finally over. Since winning the rights to select Flagg with the first overall pick in the draft at the NBA Draft Lottery, Dallas fans have been drooling over the thought of Flagg in a Mavericks draft night hat, and they finally got what they waited so long for on Wednesday night.
On Day one, Flagg will instantly become a contributor to Dallas' championship hopes, and while Nico Harrison still has a lot of moves to make this offseason, including a potential move into the second round to draft a guard, Harrison must sign a stopgap point guard to replace Kyrie Irving while he is sidelined.
Despite all of the excitement surrounding the draft last night, the Mavericks held a draft night watch party for fans to attend that didn't end well in Harrison's favor after the crowd erupted in a "Fire Nico" chant. In addition to fans voicing their opinions, moments after selecting Flagg, the team held a press conference where Harrison spoke, and his recent comment has sparked rage among Maverick fans once again.
Harrison's snarky comment proves he hasn't learned from his mistakes
After making only his third press conference appearance since shockingly trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers on February 2, Harrison has managed to outdo himself once again after making a snarky comment that got fans extremely upset. When asked about winning the lottery despite low odds, Harrison said, "Fortune favors the bold. So exciting things fell our way."
By saying "Fortune favors the bold," Harrison has pretty justified his actions for taking a huge leap and trading away Doncic for the chance at retooling and competing for a championship with a different franchise cornerstone. While luck had a lot to do with Dallas' recent success, Harrison shouldn't be boasting about his winnings.
In fact, the Mavericks' general manager should be doubling down on anything that will help keep his job more secure in the long run. It's unclear if Harrison still has hopes for his magical three-year championship window, but adding Flagg will only increase the Mavericks' future hopes of winning a championship.
What has got fans in a bind is how Harrison can now seemingly justify trading Doncic after landing one of the luckiest draft picks of all time. There's no doubt, the fanbase deserved the excitement and hope of a prospect like Flagg in a Mavericks uniform, but for Harrison to take credit for a completely avoidable situation is something fans cannot wrap their head around.
Harrison has felt the heat from an entire city for multiple months now and to act cocky about trading away the franchise cornerstone and then luckily landing yourself another chance at replacing Doncic just months later is not something he should be holding his head up high on.
Harrison still has plenty of work to do this offseason, and that includes finding an Irving replacement while he rehabs from his torn ACL, but it's still clear he needs to be humbled. Adding a young guard in the second round might be a good way for fans to sweep this comment under the rug, but it's still clear as day that Harrison doesn't seem bothered by the outrage that he has created.
