Newly acquired guard Marcus Sasser hopes to overcome major barriers this season for the Dallas Mavericks, as injuries derailed his progress with the Detroit Pistons. The former Pistons guard believes Dallas is the right spot to help him take that next step in his career as he enters his fourth season.

Marcus Sasser's time in Detroit was disappointing

Injuries have been Marcus Sasser's kryptonite over his three-year NBA journey. Last season, he played a career-low 38 games after a hip injury forced him to sit out the first two months of the season. Sasser's hip continued to flare up in March and April, as he missed significant time during that span.

The Pistons' depth also caused Sasser's playing time to decrease in Detroit. Two seasons ago, the young guard was expected to develop and cement himself as a rotation piece after a productive rookie season. The Pistons, though, reduced his role by adding other veteran guards and becoming a more complete team; these moves moved him down the depth chart.

Why Dallas is the right place for Sasser

Sasser's struggles to find a consistent role in Detroit leave the door open for him to start fresh with Dallas. Recently, the new Maverick spoke about the opportunity to start over and adapt to a new team in an exclusive interview with Isaac Harris and Nick Angstadt of Locked On Mavericks. His comments suggest that he could find a stable home with the Mavs.

The 6-foot-1 guard had positive vibes when describing why Dallas is a good fit for him.

"Just coming here (to Dallas) with a new start, new opportunity, new coaching style," Sasser said.

This is the exact change he needed after three seasons with the Pistons.

The DFW native comes to Dallas ready to prove himself. As mentioned, he struggled to stand out in Detroit, as the Pistons gave up on him after just three seasons. He never got a chance to fully prove himself.

This should all change with his fresh start in Dallas. Currently, he has a chance to be the backup point guard on the depth chart behind Kyrie Irving. Sasser can be the Mavs' secret weapon, as the team has struggled to find a quality backup point guard as of late. His ability to stretch the floor and score in bunches should help the team grow in a dark spot they desperately need answers for.

Why Sasser is positioned to have a breakout season

Sasser should get ample playing time in Dallas. He can play both guard spots, and his ability to play on and off the ball should help his case. His growth in training camp has set the standard for his success ahead of the preseason beginning tomorrow.

Sasser believes the Mavericks are the right team for him to showcase his talents, something he sometimes failed to do in Detroit.

"I can kind of be plugged in anywhere, but I kind of feel like my game is going to stand out here because of the unique squad we have," Sasser said. "I feel like our wings and our guards and our bigs, we all fit well, so I think it'll be good here for me."

Sasser gives the Mavericks the 3-point shooting they need

Last season, the Mavericks were one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the league. The team ranked near the bottom in multiple shooting categories, including 3-point attempts per game and 3-point percentage.

One issue was their lack of shot creators. Dallas struggled to find anyone who could create their own shots. They needed a player unafraid to shoot.

Sasser is the perfect solution for the issue mentioned above. He is a strong long-range shooter who can create his own shot from multiple angles. Last season, he shot a career-high 41.5 percent from the 3-point line. Mavs fans have plenty to look forward to.

He will have plenty of time to develop his game in Dallas, as he is the type of shooter that the team has needed.
