The Dallas Mavericks explored the idea of trading Daniel Gafford at the trade deadline, as he was one of the team's top trade candidates. Gafford drew plenty of interest from around the league, despite his in-season struggles. It's possible Dallas could try to trade Gafford this summer, especially if the Mavs decide to re-sign Marvin Bagley III and Moussa Cisse.
Dallas acquired Bagley III as part of the Anthony Davis trade, and he has already surpassed expectations. He has quickly gone from a throw-in from the Davis trade into a potential long-term Maverick, and this, coupled with Gafford's inconsistency, could make for a busy summer for Dallas.
Gafford's struggles this season could force Dallas to ultimately make a deal that they considered back at the deadline. His injuries and on-court production have been a headache for the Mavs, as it's clear Dallas lacks a true ball handler that Gafford needs to thrive. Not to mention, the team could use his value to acquire draft picks and expiring contracts to build for the future.
Gafford's inconsistent season could doom his future with the Mavericks
Plus, assuming Dallas were to trade Gafford, it wouldn't be the worst scenario. The team has players they could re-sign to replace him, including Bagley III and Cisse. Both players have delivered valuable production for the team in their short time together. Not to mention, they could return on a cheaper deal than what the Mavs are paying Gafford.
So, trading Gafford is a possibility, especially with his high interest from teams that need a new center and Dallas' alternative options.
One thing fans need to remember is that Gafford thrived after being traded to Dallas. He averaged 11.2 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game over his first 29 games with the team in the 2023-24 season. Not to mention, he shot 78 percent from the field, as he played a key role in helping the Mavs advance to the NBA Finals.
Last season, Gafford's numbers remained consistent since his arrival in Dallas. However, his production has taken a hit this season. Gafford is averaging 8.2 points per game, 6.5 rebounds, and shooting 63.4 percent. It's a big drop, as the Mavs extended Gafford's contract last summer. So, in reality, he isn't living up to his contract.
One reason for Gafford's struggles could be the absence of Luka Doncic. The former Mav thrived with Dereck Lively II and Gafford by his side. Both centers, especially Gafford, excelled in the pick-and-roll game. Additionally, their offensive opportunities increased as teams primarily focused on Doncic.
Another issue could be his recent string of injuries. His right ankle injury has been a concern this season, and he can't catch a break. It's a headache for a team already thin at the center position. So, this is where Bagley III and Cisse come into play.
Again, it's possible Dallas could re-sign both centers due to their recent surge in production. Gafford, on the other hand, could be traded this summer because of his decline in production.
It makes sense, right?
Just examine Bagley III's first two games. He is currently averaging 12.5 points per game and 10 rebounds in two games. Bagley III dominated in his first game for Dallas, as he had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. His recent production is a preview of what he could provide as a backup center moving forward.
As for Cisse, he is a young center who is deserving of a standard contract. He brings a lot of energy, production, and athleticism. Cisse has become an instant fan-favorite with his success on the floor. The two-way player has definitely stepped up in the absence of multiple centers. So, fans can only hope he gets the standard contract he deserves.
So, it may not be crazy to think the Dallas Mavericks could consider trading Daniel Gafford this summer. The team already has two backup centers to support Dereck Lively II once he returns. Plus, Gafford's recent decline could spell trouble for a team hoping to build around Cooper Flagg. It'll be interesting to see what ownership decides, as multiple centers have stepped up to the plate.
