The Dallas Mavericks are in disarray. The post-Luka Doncic era has brought turbulence, reflected in their 23–48 record. Still, as the franchise regroups, a few players are emerging as long-term keepers and none more unexpected than Moussa Cisse, who is quickly carving out a path as a high-impact role player.

After going undrafted out of Memphis, Cisse landed with the Mavericks on a training camp deal. A standout Summer League and strong preseason showing earned him a promotion from an Exhibit 10 to a two-way contract.

From there, Cisse continued to prove his value. He excelled with the Texas Legends and carried that momentum into the NBA. In his first month, Cisse averaged 3.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks in just 11.9 minutes per game.

Moussa Cisse has flown under the radar

Yet, Cisse generated little fanfare at first. Instead, he was overshadowed as the Mavericks’ “other” undrafted free agent, while Ryan Nembhard drew the spotlight, and rightfully so. The unassuming 5-foot-11 floor general erupted for 28 points and 10 assists in just his ninth career game, and went on to average 9.2 points and 6.8 assists per game in December.

Still, it’s not as if Cisse wasn’t producing — he was doing so with far less usage. The 6-foot-11 big man doesn’t need to score or put up gaudy numbers to make an impact. His activity level and rim deterrence define his game and project him as a high-floor player moving forward.

It took until January 19, his 24th career appearance, for Cisse to score more than 10 points. Scoring isn’t a major part of his game, and that’s part of what keeps him under the radar. A glance at the box score often tells a different story than the film.

Take Dallas’ 100–87 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on March 1, for example. Cisse didn’t score in 21 minutes of action, but still grabbed 12 rebounds and finished as one of just two Mavericks with a positive plus-minus.

Cisse is the ideal high-floor reserve big man

The 23-year-old consistently impacts the game without needing to score, a trait every contending team values. While the Mavericks aren’t there yet, that remains the goal. And even if Cisse doesn’t look like a core piece at first glance, his impact suggests otherwise.

Every team needs a rim-running, shot-blocking five, and the Memphis product fits that mold. He thrives as a play-finisher and screen-setter offensively, while anchoring the paint on defense.

Dallas already has similar pieces in Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford, though both of their long-term futures remain uncertain. That makes Cisse an ideal third center — one who could take on a significantly larger role if changes come to the rotation.
