The Dallas Mavericks are no strangers to making big trades, as Nico Harrison made one of the biggest moves in NBA history by trading Luka Doncic. However, one media outlet thinks the team could trade another star this offseason. Last week, Bleacher Report predicted the Mavs would secretly shop Kyrie Irving on the open market this offseason. They think that "he and the Mavs should agree to find a trade."

If this prediction somehow becomes true, this would be an extremely shocking move for the organization and its fans, as they are still grieving over the Doncic trade. Remember, Irving has been a vital part of the team over the past three years, so moving him would be a major shocker.

On the opposite side of the coin, the 2025 all-star missed all of last season due to an ACL tear that he suffered in March of 2025, and Dallas has made it known it's Cooper Flagg's team. So, trading Irving would make sense given his uncertain health. It would mean Dallas is ready to start a new era of basketball, making it clear they are moving on from Irving and building upon Flagg's timeline.

It would be a shocking move, only Bleacher Report would have predicted.

Why Kyrie Irving's true trade value is hard to gauge

The idea of trading Kyrie Irving seems like an uncomfortable statement to Mavs fans. The NBA all-star played a key role in helping the Mavs advance to the 2024 NBA Finals. So, why make the move?

Well, remember the team just brought in Masai Ujiri to be Dallas' new president and alternate governor. This means that no one is off the table, including Irving. Ujiri will make any move that is best for the team, including trading away a 34-year-old entering his 15th NBA season.

Yet, if Irving becomes available, what would a package look like?

The answer to the question above is unclear. Bleacher Report explained that Irving's value would be difficult to determine until he sets foot on the floor.

Dallas can only hope that if they trade Irving, they receive a value similar to what they received for Anthony Davis. The move back in February allowed the Mavs to gear up for the future, as they received four expiring contracts and five draft picks. It's not too early to assume they could receive a similar package for Irving, especially since the picks in the Davis trade weren't premium.

Why the Mavericks trading Irving might make sense for the Flagg era

As mentioned, no Mavs player except Cooper Flagg should be off the table with the new president. This means even Kyrie Irving could be moved. The most recent Dallas all-star was key during their playoff run. However, he is coming off a scary ACL tear and getting up there in age. It would make sense why the Mavericks would at least consider moving on, as Irving doesn't fit the Flagg timeline.

Sports outlets are already creating their own trade scenarios for Dallas, assuming Irving becomes available. Before the end of the 2025-26. season, Bleacher Report created its own hypothetical trade involving Irving, a move similar to the Davis one.

They created a proposal that included Irving being sent to the Milwaukee Bucks for three players, including Ryan Rollins, Kyle Kuzma, and Bobby Portis, along with a first-round pick in this year's draft.

It's a move that would definitely allow Dallas to build around Flagg. They could prepare for the future with a young asset and valuable veterans to help make the 2025 Rookie of the Year's job easier. Plus, the Mavs would then have three first-round picks this year, allowing the team to attempt to build a young trio similar to other current contenders like the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs.

Dallas Mavericks fans may not like the notion of Irving being moved. Yet, assuming the team decides to at least explore that route, they can at least secure a promising future. It's a move that would kick off the Flagg campaign in style.
