Less than an hour after the conclusion of the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery, Louisville's Mikel Brown Jr. made himself a can't-miss target for the Dallas Mavericks in this summer's draft. When asked by Locked On Mavericks' Isaac Harris what it would be like to be drafted by the Mavs, Brown Jr. didn't hold back. This was his chance to put his name on the map even more in Mavericks circles, and he took advantage of that opportunity.

"Surreal, cause I think Dallas is the best city in the country," Brown Jr. said. "It's my favorite city in the country. It would be great. I just love the vibe of Dallas. I have a lot of family in Texas as well, so that would be great. But every time I go to Dallas to play, I just love the city, I love the vibe, I love the people, the fans."

Mikel Brown Jr. sends Dallas a message they can't look past

While it was just a simple question, his response is extremely notable, and Mavs fans can't look past this. Comments like this carry extra weight ahead of the draft, and he could quickly prove himself to be a realistic target at the NBA Combine.

The perfect target for Mike Schmitz and Masai Ujiri to pursue just showed himself on the same day that they landed the No. 9 pick, and Mavs fans may have a new favorite draft prospect.

Brown Jr. fully understands that he's projected to go in the range that Dallas is going to pick in. He sees all of the mock drafts just like any other draft prospects, and players' camps have a feel for the direction that teams are feeling as well. Every move that these guys make is pointed at this time of year, and the 6-foot-5 guard made his first big move of the week before the NBA Combine even starts tomorrow.

His move was made off the court, and sometimes, this is the type of stuff that could determine where you get drafted. Teams understand this time of year is all about leverage, and Brown Jr. is already ringing his Dallas bell.

The draft order is now set, and this around the time when players and agents quietly begin to steer conversations toward preferred draft destinations. Players will meet with teams while in Chicago as well, and Dallas seems to be a place that Brown Jr. already has circled as a top pick for him.

He is a tier below guards like Darius Acuff Jr. and Keaton Wagler, but higher than Brayden Burries and Labaron Philon Jr. This makes him a match made in heaven for the Mavericks, and his potential fit with the team is undeniable.

Brown Jr. is everything the Mavericks need and more

They desperately need a young guard to play with Cooper Flagg, and Brown Jr. brings everything the Mavs need. He brings shooting, passing, and ball handling, and Dallas would maximize all of his skills in their system. He'd also have the chance to learn behind Kyrie Irving, and there aren't many better point guards to learn from than him. His mentorship with Brandon Williams helped him develop rapidly, and Brown Jr. could turn into one of the best rookie guards in the NBA if the Mavs draft him.

The NBA Draft Combine will help determine how Brown Jr. compares to his peers, but if one thing is clear, it's that he likes Dallas. Time will tell if the Mavericks feel the same way.
