The Dallas Mavericks were recently linked to Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga. His situation in Golden State is nearing the end of the line, and it seems as though a resolution has to be imminent. (Though that’s been the case for a while now.) Anthony Slater and Shams Charania of ESPN reported that the Mavs and Sacramento Kings are the two teams with the most interest.
But the Mavs should stay away. Trading for Kuminga should not be in the cards for Dallas. It’s a move that would make Nico Harrison proud, and that’s not exactly a compliment after everything that transpired during his time with the aMavericks.
Dallas needs to find a different target.
The Mavericks should not trade for Jonathan Kuminga
Kuminga definitely needs a change of scenery. He won’t be able to become his best self with the Warriors. But the Mavericks aren’t the place for him to do that.
Cooper Flagg is the face of the franchise in Dallas. That won’t be changing anytime in the next decade (barring another situation like the one Harrison brought unto the organization).
With that in mind, the Mavs need to focus on finding long-term pieces that work alongside Flagg. Kuminga doesn’t seem like that type of player, and adding him as the star of a trade doesn’t make much sense because of that.
Kuminga’s not a great three-point shooter, and he clearly needs the ball in his hands to be at his best. But with Flagg in town, he will, at best, be a second-string guy for the Mavs.
Most places will have him in that sort of role, but the Mavs, in particular, don’t seem like a great place because of the type of player Flagg projects to be. Kuminga should be playing with star guards and maybe even a big.
Playing next to a guy who also needs the ball and also plays the same position as him isn’t ideal.
A trade for Kuminga would almost certainly mean the Mavericks are sending Anthony Davis to the Warriors. And while they could potentially get some pretty intriguing draft capital in the deal, Kuminga just doesn’t seem like a great fit.
Instead, the Mavs should be looking for guys who are objectively better fits next to Flagg, even if they aren’t quite as young as Kuminga still is.
The Toronto Raptors and Atlanta Hawks have reportedly held interest in Davis, and either of their potential packages could be more intriguing than Kuminga.
It just doesn’t make sense for the Mavs to want Kuminga, which is exactly why it’s a deal that Harrison would probably love.
