Mavericks must avoid this costly free agency trap they're already eyeing

The Mavericks can't afford to overpay for Khris Middleton this summer.

The Dallas Mavericks have been rumored to be interested in re-signing veteran wing Khris Middleton once he hits free agency this summer, but Dallas can't afford to give Middleton anything more than a veteran's minimum contract, or maybe something slightly above that figure at most. It should be noted that Dallas has Middleton's Bird Rights, so he won't eat up any of their exception money if they were to re-sign him, as they could go over the cap to pull this maneuver off.

However, Middleton's play in Dallas hasn't been nearly as consistent compared to when he was first traded to the team, as he's put up some shooting blunders following a few turn-back-the-clock performances. Even if Dallas' financial situation wouldn't be compromised this summer by going over the cap to sign Middleton, this is something that could hinder their future flexibility, whether it be next season or in the summer of 2027.

Middleton's championship experience and veteran leadership are huge for a young group in Dallas, but do keep in mind Dallas already has these virtues in Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson, even if a team can never have enough contributing veterans with championship experience. If Dallas elects to retain Middleton this summer, a veteran's minimum deal, or something in the $5-8 million annual range at most, would be their best bet, but anything beyond that could eventually get ugly.

Dallas can't gamble on re-signing Khris Middleton

Middleton turns 35 years old in August, and contrary to Thompson and Irving, he's not going to make as much of an on-court impact going forward in his career, in all likelihood. Sure, he can be a microwave scorer off the dribble in the mid-range and from outside when he gets going, but he's not the same level defender he once was, and has clearly lost a step in terms of his ability to get to the rim.

He's a seasoned shooter, but he doesn't have the elite pedigree that someone like Thompson does, and the Mavericks can only afford to have so many players aged 34 or more on the roster next season. At a fair market price, Middleton would be another solid veteran in the equation for the Mavericks next season, but if he's commanding more than the aforementioned figure, Dallas should stay away to preserve future financial flexibility.

Middleton should only be back on a minimum deal

This would maybe be a different case if Irving and Thompson weren't on the roster, and Dallas was simply starved for veteran leadership, but fortunately, this isn't lacking on the Mavericks right now. This also isn't two or three seasons ago, when Middleton would've been worth a huge deal, as there's no chance he'll be getting a contract anywhere close to what his last deal was.

Ultimately, the Mavericks would be smart to re-sign Middleton on a fair deal this summer, but they can't compromise future flexibility by overpaying for him as they have with veterans in past years, such as Dwight Powell. The priority in Dallas is building around Cooper Flagg and whoever Dallas lands in this year's NBA Draft, and Middleton's shelf life in the league is starting to run down.
